Absolute Treasure
For anyone who ever has been a fan of Curtis Mayfield or the Impressions or just classic 60's soul this cd is an absolute treasure to own. It's basically two discs, one for the early years with the Impressions and the second for his solo works mostly in the 70's. The first disc has popular songs that many would identify with but it's the ones that didn't get much air play that really stand out and become instant favorites. Songs like I'm So Proud, Little Young Lover, Minstrel and Queen, and Sad Sad Girl and Boy have such a sweet innocence to them and the melodies and harmonies are near perfection. It all harkens back to a time when songwriters ruled, true love songs about real emotion, not like much of today's music and it's messages. Disc one is the type of album you let play all the way ... For anyone who ever has been a fan of Curtis Mayfield or the Impressions or just classic 60's soul this cd is an absolute treasure to own. If for no other reason buy this cd just to own the signature works like People Get Ready, Gypsy Woman, It's Alright and Amen. But my personal favorite track is Man Oh Man, and man am I glad I bought this cd.

He's probably best known for the "Superfly" soundtrack, but Curtis Mayfield's career goes far beyond that, and some of his best compositions can be found here. This album is perfect for anyone not wanting to splurge on a box set but wanting something more substantial than a ten or twelve-song "greatest hits" retread. His early R&B, as far back as 1961, can be heard here, and as the album progresses one can hear his musical styles change and progress. There's not a single weak track on here, although the real highlights include his late '60s-early '70s otuput: fliriting with psychedelia, Mayfield launches a handful of tracks, complete with wah-wah pedal effects that have a catchy way of getting under your skin - and staying there. This 2-disc set displays Mayfield during his creative peak. ... The music of Curtis Mayfield with or without The Impressions has always been on the top of my list for a favorite desert island pick. This being a double c d , you have just about everything you'll need to experience this extraordinary group from the windy city of Chicago...IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS ! ! It's all here, Soul, Funk ,plus a bit of R & B !
