    In the introduction of this volume, the author admits it's not great, and I would agree. It has all the hallmarks of a Joe Lansdale story - weirdness, and violence, and horror, as viewed by pragmatic, relatable, blue-collar characters - but the story isn't great. It doesn't hang together well, is often vague, and it devolves into a level of surrealism that strains suspension of disbelief. For example, there is a character named Popalong Cassidy who has a television for a head, whose story is mostly told in an extended third person flashback. The book is almost like an allegory, or a story told in metaphors, but not quite. Lansdale says he wrote the story to express a recurrent fever dream he used to have, and that explains a lot, I think. If you have to read everything Joe Lansdale has ...
