    Outstanding movie about a heroic age.

    This lesser-known movie takes you to a heroic age in history. Like Alexander, Richard Burton was a conqueror, but one who conquered geography rather than people. He sought only what was beyond the next mountain, hill, or plain. John Speke, although in my mind more of a self-promoter than was Burton (and both, it must be noted, had absolutely mammoth egos), was nevertheless incredibly brave and determined. This is a story of their adventure in Africa and the search for the source of the Nile. I recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates those things which are best in mankind; adventure, curiosity, and a love of learning. The acting in this movie is excellent, the filming remarkable, and the story, even though it is based upon what we know as the truth, is so incredible as to ...

    Mountains of the Moon

    Actually a good movie with unknown actors who do a good job on subject that is based on fact and about real people. It needed more character development, especially main characters, needed more background information. It assume that viewers knew some of the events that took place and some of the past adventures of main characters. Not for everyone, limited appeal, may be historical students. Pace is slow but this was a very slow adventure in real life. Still of interest to watch and think about man's struggle with the harsh realities of adventure, cultures, and life. With it in my collection, I find myself looking up more information about one of the major characters, Sir Richard Burton the 19th Century explorer. He was an extremely fascinating man.

    Take a chance... this is a great film!

    Exceptional! I wasn't familliar with the subject matter (Geography in the 1850"s) but the film made both the drama and the history fascinating. Highly reccommended!
