About this product

Product Information

A Land Remembered has been ranked #1 Best Florida Book eight times in annual polls conducted by Florida Monthly Magazine. In this best-selling novel, Patrick Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life with his wife and infant son, and ends two generations later in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need. The sweeping story that emerges is a rich, rugged Florida history featuring a memorable cast of crusty, indomitable Crackers battling wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the swamp. But their most formidable adversary turns out to be greed, including finally their own. Love and tenderness are here too: the hopes and passions of each new generation, friendships with the persecuted blacks and Indians, and respect for the land and its wildlife. A Land Remembered was winner of the Florida Historical Society's Tebeau Prize as the Most Outstanding Florida Historical Novel. Now in its 14th hardcover printing, it has been in print since 1984 and is also available in trade paperback.

How Florida was settled and developed

Best history book to learn how Florida was settled, developed, and got to 20 th century Even though the family the author uses to tie all the events together are fictional, the events, dates, and cultural life is all true.

  • You will remember the history and the book.

During a recent visit to Florida, four different people, upon learning I was an avid reader, highly and enthusiastically recommended this book. Many years of my life were spent in Florida so I began reading with an undercurrent of serious interest. The story was awesome, beyond expectations. From the opening chapter, I did not want to put it down. The author moves you through history as if you were a silent companion to each of his characters. He provides imagery in the midst of happenings that impacts you with a feeling of having been right there, experiencing the moment as it happened. What you "see" as a result of his descriptions are the type of things you would not otherwise have known. The result of reading this book is that you learn how history is the result of ...

  • what a fine ride!

This book was lent to me by a neighbor who loves Florida history. I normally read a few pages of a book at a time and fall asleep. With this book, I read 75 pages before I made myself put it down at 2:00 in the morning. It is awesome! Where is the movie? Being a Florida native and having ridden horses many miles with "crackers" who used to drive cattle from Jacksonville to Tampa prior to Florida's open range law being revised, I gained much information to help me understand the nature and hardships of the people living in those historical times. It also let me see the term "cracker" in a whole new light. Thank you, Patrick Smith. If there is trouble, I want a "cracker" backing me.

  • A Land Remembered

If you love Florida history this is the book to read. It is Historical Fiction but it parallels the beginning of South Florida. If you are familiar with a lot of the old small town Florida, you will recognize the locations. This is a story of the MacIvey family, through three generations, from dirt poor Crackers to wealthy Real Estate tycoons.

  • A classic “Old Florida” novel

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in history and loves a compelling story of family struggles and unexpected friendship in an earlier time and place. It had been on my “must read” list for a while and I’m so glad I finally made time to read it!
