About this product

Product Information

A Newbery Medal Winner For over thirty-five years, Ellen Raskin's Newbery Medal-winning The Westing Game has been an enduring favorite. This highly inventive mystery involves sixteen people who are invited to the reading of Samuel W. Westing's will. They could become millionaires-it all depends on how they play the tricky and dangerous Westing game, a game involving blizzards, burglaries, and bombings! Ellen Raskin has created a remarkable cast of characters in a puzzle-knotted, word-twisting plot filled with humor, intrigue, and suspense. Winner of the Newbery Medal Winner of the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award An ALA Notable Book A School Library Journal One Hundred Books That Shaped the Century "A supersharp mystery...confoundingly clever, and very funny." -- Booklist , starred review "Great fun for those who enjoy illusion, word play, or sleight of hand." -- The New York Times Book Review "A fascinating medley of word games, disguises, multiple aliases, and subterfuges--a demanding but rewarding book." -- The Horn Book

  • A book loved by many...but is it appropriate for all?

This is a book that evokes strong emotions from anyone who has read it. A lot of adults claim that they loved it as a kid, but a lot of others are puzzled by its popularity. I fall into the latter category. (Please let me explain, Westing fans!) It took me several tries to get through this book as an adult, and it's because of the vast number of characters. The book is clever for sure, and for many years it was about the only well-written mystery out there for adolescents. The writing is good, and the style is interesting. It also appeals to both boys and girls, which is a HUGE accomplishment for adolescent writers. The story follows a group of people living in a building near the Westing mansion, all of whom soon become involved in a mystery that involves a lot of money. The ...

  • A little Cozy Mystery

I am a fan of Cozy Mysteries so my Granddaughter recommended The Westing Game. I have not finished the book, but I am enjoying the story, the characters and setting.

  • Gripping

i loved the entire book. it hooks you at the beginning and keep the ball rolling all throughout the book. It is all about this group of people who seem to have nothing in common, other than living in the same builing, who are trying to solve the murder of their benefactor. The book was recommended to me by a classmate in my Adolescent Liturature class.
