About this product

Product Information

The third installment of Bernard Cornwell's New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, "like Game of Thrones, but real" (The Observer, London)--the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series. The year is 878. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, has helped the Saxons of Wessex defeat the invading Danes. Now, finally free of his allegiance to the victorious, ungrateful King Alfred, he is heading home to rescue his stepsister, a prisoner of Kjartan the Cruel in the formidable Danish stronghold of Dunholm. Uhtred's best hope is his sword, Serpent-Breath, for his only allies are Hild, a West Saxon nun fleeing her calling, and Guthred, a slave who believes himself king. Rebellion, chaos, fear, and betrayal await them in the north, forcing Uhtred to turn once more, reluctantly, to the liege he formerly served in battle and blood: Alfred the Great.

  • NOOO!!! 6 months wait for the next book. This was GREAT

Book three in the Saxon Chronicles is the best book by Bernard Cornwell that I have read. I had read his "Grail Quest Trilogy" before coming to this series, which I thought was a trilogy, but now know could go on much longer (it will be at least 4 books and I certainly hope for more). "Lords of the North" continues the fantastic, emotional tale of Uhtred, the fictional Saxon-born, Dane-adopted and raised warrior, that is fated to fight for England and a king that he does not like, Alfred. Uhtred lost his family when he was a boy and was adopted by a Danish Viking warrior, Earl Ragnar, who he loved as a father, and from whom he learned of the pagan deities, especially the spinners, the three mythical creatures that weave the fate of every man; hence his repeated statement through the ...

  • A fun quick historic novel. Like a romance novel for dudes. Uhtred is always fun...

Good low cost option for a quick candybar read. Better value than getting electronic version.

  • The third book in the series doesn't disappoint

The third book in a three part series by Cornwell, it doesn't disappoint. If you've read the first two, then this one is a "must". The series is about the Viking invasion of England as told in the first person by an Englishman who lived in that time and who, although raised by the Vikings whom he grows to love and respect, fights for King Alfred, who is credited with driving the Vikings out of England. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books and if you are a Cornwell fan you'll like the change in venue from the Richard Sharpe books.
