    Betty MacDonald writes of the lonely hardscrabble life of chicken-farming in Washington state in a way that makes EVERYONE reading this book want to give it a whirl. Her neighbors were actually the real Ma and Pa Kettle, complete with a ramshackle farm, shiftless boys, and a lazy yet persuasive husband. We learn about how the romantic lights of kerosene lamp are not so romantic when you forget to order oil, or when half the lamp gets blackened because you can't cut the wick straight. How the food is luxurious and plentiful and the mountains have a haughty demeanor. So many trees crowd into Betty MacDonald's backyard,seemingly day by day that she expects to look up and see a mountain pull its trees back up over its bare shoulder. This book is resoundingly full of new metaphors, and joyful ...
