I'm still going through this long and detailed book. It's a reference book, and I have quite a few others on the subject. It's wild mushroom season here in the Rockies, and another reference book is only a positive. This one covers more mushrooms than inhabit the Rocky Mountains, but is a valuable resource regardless. One thing that some might object to in 2022 and beyond is that the color plates are in a clump instead of attached to each species, but it's an older book and we're somewhat spoiled. Black and white photos are abundant with reference to color plates in the author's view of the most important mushrooms. It's certainly as valuable as the Audubon mushroom book, and that it's in a different format (and that it has MANY black and white photos) is helpful to anyone looking to ... Mushrooms Demystified book
This book is one of the most excellent books I have ever seen on the subject of mushrooms, and fungi in general. The pictures are most excellent, and the author writes very well (he really knows his mushrooms!) There is a lot of detail included in the description of each mushroom, as well as some personal anecdotes. I have enjoyed reading through this book very much, and it will be invaluable to me in the years to come.This book is one of the most excellent books I have ever seen on the subject of mushrooms, and fungi in general. The pictures are most excellent, and the author writes very well (he really knows his mushrooms!) There is a lot of detail included in the description of each mushroom, as well as some personal anecdotes. It's so amazing and complex. Seneca, first century Roman philosopher hated mushrooms. Emperor Claudius was poisoned by them. The Normans praised their aphrodisiac qualities and the ancient Egyptians decreed them to be food for royalty alone.Did you know that they contain protein? I, for one had no idea that 8 ounces of shiitakes contain almost 5 grams of protein. Although mushrooms are often treated like veggies, they are a fungus and have no roots, leaves, flowers or seeds. Shiitakes contain lentinan and L-ergothioneine. If you have never heard of those substances before, neither had I, since they ... Lentinan helps bolster the immune system, strengthening its ability to fight infection and disease. That is why this compound is being researched for its ability to fight cancer and AIDS. Some researches think it might even help with allergies. L-ergothioneine is a powerful antioxidant, which fortunately is not destroyed when the mushrooms are cooked. Shiitakes make a great addition to stir-fries. I enjoy them sautéed with asparagus and ginger. Or you might enjoy them, like YumSugar does, on a mushroom pizza. Since these mushrooms are becoming increasingly popular, they are easy to find in most grocery stores. If you can't find them there, you should try an Asian market. Learn to love them - they are good for you and tasty!!! These days truffles, porcini, morels, crimini, ceps, portabella, black Chinese, yellow chantarelles, cinammon caps, hon-shimeji and their cousins are no longer seen as either the food of gods or of devils. Mushrooms no longer conjure images of the Spirits with hallucinogenic psilocybe but instead conjure visions of one of the most intriguing and subtle of all gastronomic treats. A mushroom is a healthy wholesome and altogether delicious treat This field of study fascinates me.I did a lot of drawing and diagramming when studying for biology classes. I can usually remember a picture of how a process works better than a list of steps alone. I have this four-color pen that I use when taking notes and studying. It's great to have the red and blue inks when you're diagramming things like the path of blood through the heart. The bonus for me is that drawing is fun, so I don't feel like I am studying when I am doing it. I've noticed that many of the first year neuroscience students at my school use a "brain coloring book" to get familiar with the anatomy. There's one teacher who even requires it! For the unfamiliar terminology, it's really helpful to look up the meaning of the term and the Latin or Greek root. Once you know why something is called what it is, it is much easier to remember. In fact, I think the best textbooks are the ones that give you that info when a new term is introduced. It's often very easy, because you can relate it to an English word that has the same root. This book has lots of pictures for memorization.I usually write out the material as I read it. Not word for word. Somehow it just sticks. - If you have a mic for your computer, record the important stuff and put it on your ipod(or w.e.) and listen to it whenever you get the chance. - I didn’t like making study cards so I used power point. You can time the speed of the slides which forces you to think and recall

The pocket companion, All That the Rain Brings is essential to carry along while shrooming. The pros all have this book, it is expensive and heavy, but it will open up the world of edible mushrooms, a world more interesting and useful than wild plants. The first time one comes home with twenty pounds of chanterelles or morels one will have paid for this book several times over. Don't come home empty handed from a hunt, camping trip or even a casual stroll though the hills. David Arora is a real world expert, not just an academic, he can still be found hunting morels in Alaska and Canada.This is the Definitive guide to collecting mushrooms. I'm interested in growing mushrooms for my family and perhaps even gathering wild mushrooms. This is THE book on mushrooms, probably a little more detailed than the everyday mushroom hobbyist needs--ant it scared me right out of the idea of wild mushroom hunting. One drawback is that the book references "mushrooms found in our area," and unfortunately, the author's area is not the same as mine. I live in the southeast, so many of the mushrooms aren't pertinent to my habitat. Still it's a fascinating read, with plenty of photos and descriptions.
