Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - "Extremely funny . . . inspired lunacy . . . and] over much too soon."-- The Washington Post Book World Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod's girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he's bought over the years. Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars Praise for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "A whimsical oddyssey . . . Characters frolic through the galaxy with infectious joy." -- Publishers Weekly "Irresistable " -- The Boston Globe

Don't panic! Here are words of praise for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! "It's science fiction and it's extremely funny...inspired lunacy that leaves hardly a science fiction cliche alive." Washington Post "The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes, and his travels afford a wild satire of present institutions." Chicago Tribune "Very simply, the book is one of the funniest SF spoofs ever written, with hyperbolic ideas folding in on themselves." School Library Journal "As parody, it's marvelous: It contains just about every science fiction cliche you can think of. As humor, it's, well, hysterical.", "Lively, sharply satirical, brilliantly written . . . ranks with the best set pieces in Mark Twain." -- The Atlantic "Irresistible!" -- The Boston Globe "With droll wit, a keen eye for detail and heavy doses of insight . . . Adams makes us laugh until we cry." -- The San Diego Union-Tribune "One of the greatest achievements in comedy. A work of staggering genius." --David Walliams "Really entertaining and fun." --Michael Palin "Fizzing with ideas . . . brilliant." --Charlie Brooker "Weird and wonderful." --Eoin Colfer "It changed my whole life. It's literally out of this world." --Tom Baker, "Extremely funny . . . inspired lunacy . . . [and] over much too soon." -- The Washington Post Book World "The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes, and his travels afford a wild satire of present institutions." -- Chicago Tribune "Very simply, the book is one of the funniest SF spoofs ever written, with hyperbolic ideas folding in on themselves." -- School Library Journal "[A] whimsical odyssey . . . • I didn't get it

Let me start by saying that I LOVED the movie. Usually, when you enjoy a movie you are bound to hold to the old cliche "the movie was good but the book was better". In this case, although the book was okay, I thought the movie was much better. The book was funny in parts and obviously was the inspiration for a hilarious movie, but on the whole, I was disappointed with the book. If you enjoyed the movie, I would recommend the book just for a different slant on the story. Apparently, people have been talking about this book for years. I guess I just don't understand how the book falls so flat with such a great writer. The story, the characters, the imagaination, all was well done, but at the end of the book, I was just left feeling empty. I couldn't believe it. The book just ended ...

  • "It hung in the air exactly the way bricks don't"

Douglas Adams is a brilliant author who creates metaphors with the least likely comparisons that both work, and leave you laughing. My friend Marissa read this out loud to me on a road trip and I am of the opinion that it is best read that way, preferably with friends. I bought it again to read aloud to one of my friends who hadn't had the chance yet to partake of Douglas Adam's writing.

  • Misrepresentation

Was not the edition shown was a much later movie edition cover. Quality of book was fine just a more commercialized edition that I already had a copy of. The book is one of my absolutely favorite reads and I highly recommend it but very dissatisfied with the version I received.
