About this product

Product Information

Praised by Patricia Cornwell as "the best historical novelist of our time," John Jakes began his bestselling career with this vibrant novel of romance and adventure. The Bastard begins the enduring eight-volume saga of the Kent family, and their participation in the events that shaped a nation... The illegitimate son of the Duke of Kentland, Phillipe Charboneau has been denied his birthright by his father's family. So he flees to London where he learns the printing trade...but his journey truly begins when he falls under the influence of a man named Benjamin Franklin and travels to America. Changing his name to Philip Kent, he finds work at a printing house, and discovers the radical writings of Sam Adams. He has a new identity and a new passion. And soon he will become a soldier, fighting alongside the colonists in a turbulent adventure that would be called the Revolutionary War...

John Jakes is the godfather of historical novelists. (Los Angeles Times) Perhaps no author has made popularized American history more his own province than John Jakes. (Jacksonville Times-Union) Jakes's bent for historical accuracy is unmatched in commercial fiction. • HOW ABOUT A FOLLOW-UP TO THIS SERIES, J.J.!

I purchased this series for my grandson who is 13. He is an avid reader and I've told him what an AWESOME SERIES this is. If I had read this series in high school, I would have A'ed American History. I couldn't wait for the book to end that I was reading but didn't want it to end because I'd have o wait so long for the next book! I think I had severe withdrawal when I finished the last book! I do know I cried and cried because the series was over. I wish he would pick it up now with a book coming out in 2016, 40 years after the bicentennial and take 10 years to bring it up to 1976. That would give him 10 years to write it and conclude in 2026, 250 years after 1776. WOW!! WHAT A SERIES! The series was surposed to end in the year 1976, and could still end there, thus, the Bicentennial ...

  • John Jakes is Fantastic!

The Bastard by John Jakes is the start of a 7 book series named the Kent Family Chronicles. It is wonderful Pre-Revolutionary War novel beginning this great series. The story starts in France and follow Phillipe Charbeneau through a trouble life in a journey to America in a time when America is strugling to find its self. Jakes is absolutely incredible at creating characters in a true event and time emphasizing the important events in time as if the characters where there without affecting the events. The book will make you search your local library for The Rebels, the 2nd Volume of the Kent Family Chronicles! Highly Recommend!
