About this product

Product Information

Wizard for hire Harry Dresden gets mixed-up with the dead in this "haunting, fantastical novel"( Publishers Weekly ) in the #1 New York Times bestselling series. Harry Dresden's faced some pretty terrifying foes during his career. Giant scorpions. Oversexed vampires. Psychotic werewolves. It comes with the territory, when you're the only professional wizard in the Chicago area phone book. But in all Harry's years of supernatural sleuthing, he's never faced anything like this: the spirit world's gone postal. All over Chicago, ghosts are causing trouble--and not just of the door-slamming, boo-shouting variety. These ghosts are tormented, violent, and deadly. Someone--or some thing --is purposely stirring them up to wreak unearthly havoc. But why? And why do so many of the victims have ties to Harry? If Harry doesn't figure it out soon, he could wind up a ghost himself...

Praise for the Dresden Files "Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe."-- Entertainment Weekly "Fans of Laurell  K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series."-- Midwest Book Review   "Superlative."-- Publishers Weekly (starred review)   "One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves."-- Cinescape   "Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry's wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot."-- Booklist (starred review)   "What's not to like about this series'...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves."-- SF Site   "A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel's TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner."-- Library Journal   "What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files]."-- The Washington Times, Praise for the Dresden Files "Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Philip Marlowe."-- Entertainment Weekly "Fans of Laurell K. Worn but welcome

A long sought edition. Arrived in good shape, and the binding is sound, though with many creases on the spine. So it goes. Very greatful to have it.

  • More than just a great Science Fiction book

This books in general (the Dresden Files series) are more than great Science Fiction reading. There is a lot to the story line that transcends mere pleasure of reading and sets your mind on fire. I put this books in the same category as "The Davinci Code" I have found so many intriguing thoughts that make you think and evaluate your everyday lives. Intertwined with the fiction there are many interesting thoughts brought by the author. In this particular installment Harry Dresden, Chicago's only self proclaimed wizard, comes face to face with tormented, violent and deadly ghosts that have been purposely stirred to create havoc on the city. It is up to Harry, to find out why and put a stop to it, before anymore of his friends succumb to the tortures of this creatures. The narrative in these ...

  • Being dead isn't always a permanent solution.

I enjoyed this book as I followed the detective and wizard, Harry Dresden. He has to discern evil from really evil in this story...no good here. We follow Dresden as he tries to save lives as well as his own and rid Chicago of pure evil. What I really like about the character is that he is completely human and is reminded that he's mortal in every situation. He tries to protect the ones that he loves and this just brings even more danger to many others. We also learn a little more about his early family and how he became to be a wizard and his training. He has a very good friend that is introduced in this book and he appears in later books as well. I am looking forward to the next installment for Dresden. Butcher has a wonderful imagination and a terrific way of expressing it!

  • Another Great Harry Dresden Installment

Harry Dresden is a wizard for hire in the mean streets of Chicago. Not many in the real world take him and his wizardry seriously. But in the preternatural world, he is a force to be reckoned. In this book, Harry pairs up with his friend Michael, a Knight of the religious order to save his friends from an evil called Nightmare. Twists and turns abound in every chapter! The action is fantastic, the mistical implecations are fascinating, and Harry is just so darn wonderfully likable.

  • Harry Dresden Lights My Fire!

The entire series of Harry Dresden ("Dresden Files") books are terrific. They are all mysteries that just happen to involve paranormal beings and Harry, a low-key kind of guy whose Yellow Pages ad offers wizard's services. His cat, Mister, is a force of nature, and his enormous dog, Mouse, is an escapee from a Tibetan temple. His friends and enemies are many and varied. You can chart Harry's growth as a wizard and as a person from one book to the next.
