About this product

Product Information

Since Barbie's introduction in 1959, her impact on baby boomers has been revolutionary. Far from being a toy designed by men to enslave women, she was a toy invented by women to teach women what -- for better or worse -- was expected of them. In telling Barbie's fascinating story, cultural critic and investigative journalist M. G. Lord, herself a first-generation Barbie owner, has written a provocative, zany, occasionally shocking book that will change how you look at the doll and the world. Book jacket.

Item as described. Shipped quickly. Would have preferred these be shipped in a box rather than a bag, as the cartons of this set were a bit damaged in transit, but the items inside are still in good condition. Overall satisfied with this transaction and would buy from this seller again.

  • The ultimate Barbie biography and a fascinating history of her place in material culture.

I read this book years ago and it stayed with me. I felt that just the notes section alone made it worth adding it to my personal library. Extremely well researched and This book is currently out of print though there is a reprint coming out soon to take advantage of the widespread success of the recent Barbie film. The author is clued in to the history of culture and as an investigative journalist she brings that resourcefulness to her research on what his without a doubt the world's most popular doll.
