One of my earliest memories is of this version of the classic George Orwell story "Animal Farm". Originally released in 1964 or so, I watched it first from the standpoint of a little girl who loved animals. As I grew older, I revisited the story as someone who started learning the "ways of the world" and found these ways not always as they should be, and that these animals were not so different from people I had learned to know. I re-watched the DVD I recently purchased, and found the characters at once comfortingly familiar, and also somewhat unsettling. Of course, we know how the story concludes, but I still wish (in my little girl, affectionate way)that Boxer would not have been "taken to the knackers", and that Benjamin and Boxer and all the animals would have been able to live out ... I chose the animated version over the remake because I was showing it to a group of students. Their assignment was to note how music, color, sound, setting, and the animation of the characters related to the mood and theme of the novel. They were then asked to include what they would change about the screen version. This version is rated G and has been approved for use.
