About this product

Product Information

When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king's wedding mass as payment for the baker's generosity. The baker writes "One Mass" on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town's surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a mass. Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story. This has been a best-selling children's book since it was first published. It us often made into plays for catechises, or used in homilies, and read on YouTube, and on private sites and channels.

  • The Weight of a Mass

This book is a wonderful tale about the value a one Mass. A poor beggar woman wishes to offer a Mass for a wealthy baker in exchange for a few day old items. The baker refuses thinking he is getting a poor deal. Using a scale to compare the value of the Mass against the baked goods, the baker soon finds out that all the fancy baked goods in his bakery (including a royal wedding cake)are not worth a single Mass. I own the book and had to have it for a First Communion gift for a family friend. It is a book whose message can be enjoyed by all ages, but it's target audience is about 5-10 years old. Ii will undoubtedly buy it again in the future for another gift.

  • Beautiful book about the value of the Mass

Beautiful illustrations and a compelling story. It kept my four year old interested the entire time and we've already re-read the story multiple times.

  • Beautifully written and illustrated

I love this book, the only recommendation I have is to explain what true event it was that inspired it!

  • Breathtaking Illustrations; Timeless Message

I purchased this book to read to my Sunday school class. The kids were enthralled from the beginning of the story, but the most important reaction came from the parents who happened to be in attendance. The story obviously connected with them at a visceral level, since all asked for the name of the book and where I purchased--they all wanted their own copy.

  • Very nice book!

It's a beautiful story with very nice illustrations. Both my sons, 6 and 9 years old, enjoyed it. I bought another copy as part of a fist communion present and the parents and boy seemed to love it, too.
