Outstanding high-power amp is light, solid and easy to use.
Introduction: The Crown XTi 6000 is a light-weight, DSP-endowed, two-channel, solid-state electronic powerhouse. Capable of effortlessly driving large passive speaker cabs to high volume levels this amp is designed for portable PA applications including DJ rigs and band sound reinforcement in small to medium venues. Connect it to a pair of speakers, crank it up and get *REALLY LOUD*. Background: The XTi product line is essentially the little brother of the Crown I-Tech line. The I-Tech line, however, is designed for permanent PA installations or very large touring rigs whereas the XTi line is designed more for smaller portable PA applications. As a result the XTi line is substantially lighter, slightly less powerful and a lot less expensive. This amp is perfect for a moderate DJ rig ... Teamed with more of its kind and some worthy 4-Ohm speakers and you can start to fill some serious space with clean, accurate sound. Obsolete? Nah! In looking at the XTi line keep in mind that Crown revamped the whole line with some enhancements and a new faceplate in mid-2011. The resulting new 'XTi2' line has the same numeric designators with a '2' in the ones digit. This means the XTi 6002 is the current equivalent Crown amp. No harm buying a closeout or used XTI 6000, but make sure you get the remainder of the 3-year transferrable warranty. In some cases you can get a GREAT deal on closeouts from an authorized dealer. Lighter! The entire XTi line consists of 2U-high amps that are designed for the high power density and light weight that is required in portable PA applications. While the XTi 6000 weighs in at 28 lbs., all of the other amps in the XTi line are only 17 lbs.. This light weight is achieved by using a switching mode power supply instead of an analog linear supply. The difference is that the digital supply uses a MUCH smaller transformer. At introduction time these amps were some of the lightest amps in their power class. The 6000 is heavier because the power supply was beefed up to support the higher wattages that the 6000 cranks out. When I decided to purchase a new amp I looked at QSC, but liked the Crown design and warranty better. I use my XTi 6000 to drive two JBL MRX528S subwoofers in a sound reinforcement rig for a metal band. The amp comes with a HiQnet port that lets you download 'tunings' for various speakers from your computer. JBL and Crown are both Harman International companis, so the JBL tunings are readily available. I download the tuning, set the DSP to limit 3 dB below the speaker power limit and the amp makes them sound smooth and fat with no risk of blowing the drivers. In the past I have also used my 6000's to bi-amp speakers using the DSP to do the crossover function. In this mode I can hook up to the Speakon connector on channel 1 and get power to the bi-amped speaker with a single 4-conductor cable - nice and neat. If all of this still isn't enough you can use this amp to drive into 2-Ohm loads with high stability or bridge both channels and get a LOT more power. Amazing! Pros: Light weight. LOTS of power. Stable at 2 Ohms. Simple, effective DSP. Solid reliability. 3-year transferrable warranty Cons: I can't think of any... Caveats: Crown recently issued a service notice on some XTi series amps for a defect and you should check the Crown web site to see if your amp is impacted by this service notice.
