I bought this book because I am interested in blacksmithing as a hobby, it was recommended to me by a professional blacksmith. He said that it was possible to get into smithing with a minimum cash outlay, and this book explains ways to do it. If you are in a hurry to get off the ground with blacksmithing it may cost you a little more than $50 to get started, because he kept his costs down by shopping rummage sales and scrap yards. That takes time. That being said, this book provides great examples of ways to improvise to save money. It has a lot of information on some of the finer points of knife making, such as heat treating, without the need for expensive equipment. While the focus is on bladesmithing, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in trying their hand at ...

  • Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop by Wayne Goddard

2006, Paperback, Revised edition. This book is full of ways to get into knife making easily. He seems to cover all the aspects of knife making a beginner would like to know about. Lots of great, cheap ways to make or find forges, equipment, etc. Only minor problem I found is that I do not have all the metal working equipment, cutting torches etc he started out with. Since that is my lack, not the books, it's not a issue unless you are dead set against making your own equipment or don't want to acquire more tools to make other tools. Well worth the price to get a great insight on knife making.

  • Wayne Goddards $50 knife shop (2006 paperback, revised)

I love this very informative book,it is a wealth of information and knowledge I would highly recomend it to new students of the art of blade smithing as well as seasoned veterans of the craft. This literary master piease will be a welcome addition to any blade smiths libraey just starting out or a twenty year pro. Sincerly, quicksilver904

  • To learn the art of knife making.

Very well written and easy to understand. The pictures and charts were easy to read and clear. The author was not only a good writer but a great teacher. I will buy more of his books or dvd's.

  • Practicality defined

If you have considered making a knife but thought you needed thousands of tools and years of esoteric knowledge, Goddard will tell you different. He presents an experienced voice proposing a simple method (and inexpensive) to get started and debunks a number of myths. Covers know-how, material, skills and tools you can make. I liked it a lot and found it fun to read too.
