good book but I found the print size a bit small .
I purchased this fine book for my elderly mother this past christmas. Its beautiful and a real keeper. My mother enjoys reading josephus and learning about his views on biblical accounts. The only negative aspect of the book is the exceedingly small print. My mother is 91 and has to use a sheet or page magnifier,which is akward,buut makes the reading manageable for her aging eyes. I must hasten to add that I can readily understand the necessity of a reduced print. Their is so very much material in a 2 inch thick single volume as it is. This was my oversight, I should have anticipated this aspect and I would have selected a volume much more limited in the scope of his work with a coinsiding increase in the size of print. In conclusion I would say its a great book with acceptable print for ... I purchased this fine book for my elderly mother this past christmas. Its beautiful and a real keeper. An absolute must for layperson and theologian alike!
Flavius Josephus is usually quoted after the Holy Bible itself in reference to Biblical traditions and events. It is a MASSIVE tome, so don't look to do the "one or two sittings" type of novel reading that you are used to. I encourage you to keep The Bible open alongside Josephus, to gain a fuller perspective of where he is coming from. Pages 1101 through 1106 provide listings of Biblical and Extra-Biblical (Maccabees) that parallel to Josephus' Histories. You will find this an invaluable tool. Don't just gloss over the endnotes; they are invaluable in understanding some of the nuances that the average person will not be aware of. Examples would be how the compilers and editors point out the rationale behind apparently obvious exaggerations on Josephus' part, and how the accuracy of ...
