About this product

Product Information

From the author of The Whisper of the River and Epiphany . In this coming-of-age story, Porter Osbourne Jr. is a precocious, sensitive, and rambunctious boy trying to make it through adolescence during the Depression. On a red-clay farm in Georgia, he learns all there is to know about cotton-chopping, hog-killing, watermelon-thumping, and mule-handling. School provides a quick course in practical joking, schoolboy crushes, athletic glory, and clandestine sex. But it is Porter's family-- his genteel, patient mother, his swarm of cousins, his snuff-dipping grandmother, and, most of all, his beloved though flawed father--who teaches Porter the painful truths about growing up strong enough to run with the horsemen. "The writing is elegant, reflective, and amused. Mr. Sams is a storyteller sure of his audience . . . gifted with perfect timing."-- The New York Times Book Review "Remarkable both for its humor and its sustained and detailed picture of a mischievous Southern farmboy's life during the Great Depression."-- The Washington Post

  • Book entertaining but condition not what I expected.

About half way through reading the book so far and it is very interesting. Have wanted to read one of Dr. Sam's books but just getting around to it. Dr. Sams was my Dr. for many years and after he retired his son became my PCP. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an entertaining read. Makes me want to read the other two books in the series. Condition of the book was not what I expected. Condition was listed a good, but I would only grade as fair. Rear cover half torn off and creased.

  • Run With the Horsmen

Run With the Horsemen by Ferrol Sams is a concise and revealing glimpse at life in the South not too many years ago as experienced by a young boy. Sams takes the reader inside the Southern community where he grew up and we meet the various members of his family and friends as well as the preacher of his local church, who was also the young Sam's stern teacher in the small-town school that he attended. The story is very well written, informative and also very entertaining. I would have no trouble recommending this novel to any who might be interested in this time-frame and Southern locality.

  • Ferrol Sams Run w/ the Horsemen

I love this book, if asked this is the book that I tell is my most favorite, ever... and I read a lot!! It is the ultimate Southern read. I read it aloud to my husband on a long trip back from Birmingham, AL and we would get to a part and I would be laughing so hard that I couldn't read any further. I will have to say that the first chapter is written in very discriptive manner, but after you get through that first chapter it reads faster.

  • Growing up in the old south

A great read, never a dull moment!

  • You need to read this book!

Sams is one of the best Southern authors. His storytelling method is unequalled and his writing style is very engaging. Wonderful story about a bygone era, but inspiring to all of us to achieve 'raised right' status nonetheless.
