The item was described as new but had been opened and was sent to me in its packaging. Why someone would open it and not use it strikes me as odd but there is no way to determine the accuracy of this statement. I believe the description stated the proceeds would go to charity, so I will take the seller at its word. Whatever the case, my knives, which had dulled, are appreciably sharper after several rounds of use. I had previously sent them out for stone sharpening; this item does a better job.
