    Simple Text, Ghastly Photos

    I bought two elementary-school-age books, one written in 1984 and the other in 2014. The earlier one has pages of well-written paragraphs which convey information on the life and behavior of the four species of hyenas, and is illustrated with a few black and white photos. The newer one has a few very short bullet-point style sentences per page, which feels disjointed and kind of hyper, and several of the all-page photos feature pictures of hyenas ripping apart prey animals, or running with dead gazelles dangling from their jaws. If this book is aimed at kindergarteners (judging by the writing style) then the photos are pretty ghastly for the age bracket. Out of 23 pages, there are eight pictures of hyenas killing animals.
