Product Information

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * "A big sweeping novel of friendship and marriage" ( The Washington Post ) by the celebrated author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered--and shadowed--by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina's dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for. Spanning two turbulent decades, South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest: a masterpiece from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds. Praise for South of Broad "Vintage Pat Conroy . . . a big sweeping novel of friendship and marriage." -- The Washington Post "Conroy remains a magician of the page." -- The New York Times Book Review "Richly imagined . . . These characters are gallant in the grand old-fashioned sense, devoted to one another and to home. That siren song of place has never sounded so sweet." --New Orleans Times-Picayune "A lavish, no-holds-barred performance." -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution "A lovely, often thrilling story." -- The Dallas Morning News "A pleasure to read . . . a must for Conroy's fans." --Associated Press

Compelling tale of the old south in a simpler and crueler time.

A friend recommended Pat Conroy's "South of Broad" to me saying that my writing style is similar, plus my twin (several sets of twins within the story) had just passed away while living in Charleston, SC. I went to see him just a few weeks before he passed and I remember many of the street names of the city's Historical district. I'm only about 100 pages into the book, but so far I find the tale interesting and compelling. I had read "The Great Santini" years ago and enjoyed it.

  • Excellent Novel!

Pat Conroy is one of my favorite authors. One of the best books I have ever read was "Beach Music". So, of course, I had to have Pat's newest novel. As always, his writing enthralled me. He is one of the best at describing a scene, a person or event so beautifully that you can see it with your minds-eye. His characters in "South of Broad" are wonderful. His love for the city of Charleston shines though every page of his novel. The characters are so vividly described that I feel sure that some of them most be based on people he knows or knew. I thoroughly enjoyed "South of Broad". Was it as good as "Beach Music"? Not quite. But, it is still well worth reading.

  • The real Charleston that reveals all but what the old money keeps secret

If you have ever lived or just visited Charleston, SC this book is a must read. It takes you into the city the way it is meant to be seen. The history of the old city never ends and the author does a wonderful job telling the story in a way that gives you insight of a true Charlestonian. Though there are many secrets held close by the old bluebloods in this historical city, Conroy learned much during his time at the great Citdael. Only few chapters in, already I am homesick.

  • South of Broad meets Ordinary People

I am in a book club and this was the choice for the month. I love the book because it takes place in the South (Charleston, SC). While uncomfortable at times, I love the family conflict and no one does family conflict better than southerners. It is highly reminscent of "Ordinary People" by Judith Guest in content. Conroy tends to be extremely wordy when it comes to descriptions but it gives the reader a very clear visual. I would have no problems recommending this book to anyone.

  • south of broad by pat conroy

i decided to buy this book because the author has a very good reputation and he has not published a book in a long time. it is such a pleasure to experience the South as he portrays it in this novel. it was an excellent story with fascinating characters. Some scenes in the beginning reminded me of Dickens and some other places F. Scott Fitzgerald came to mind. the best book i have read in a long time.
