About this product

Product Information

After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in a remote part of the ocean floor, a team of divers on a prototype underwater oil rig are pressed into service by the U.S. Navy in a rescue attempt. When a hurricane cuts off contact between the surface and the underwater depths, the crew begin to see evidence of a strange, possibly alien intelligence at work. While chief Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) bickers with his ex-wife and boss (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Navy commander begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the mysterious alien life and threatens to use a recovered nuclear weapon to destroy everything. James Cameron's undersea epic is a tale of sacrifice and hope in an amazing alien landscape that covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Featuring landmark visual effects but plagued by production difficulties, the cast and crew were stretched to the breaking point and THE ABYSS became one of the most expensive films ever made in its time, but the final result is a remarkable blend of action and human drama. Scenes cut from the theatrical version, including a number of special effects sequences involving huge tidal waves threatening the cities of the world, are restored in the Special Edition versions.

  • Another Sci-Fi Must Have

Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio star in this sci-fi adventure set in a deep water station on the edge of "The Abyss". After a nuclear submarine sinks near their station, the military sends a dive team lead by Michael Biehn to invistage. The Abyss is Sci-Fi at it's best, it offers the viewer a variety of emotions ranging from laughter, to love, to fear and finally to wonder at what is possible in the lives of the station crew. Rated 5 of 5 for its strong action and great performance by the lead actors. The Abyss is should be in every Sci-Fi lovers library.

  • In my TOP 10! A must-OWN, WELL-rounded, ALL-in-1 movie!

In my TOP 10! A must-OWN, WELL-rounded, ALL-in-1 movie! Does it GET any better!? A James Cameron masterpiece! This movie could appeal to ANYONE, 'cause it has: strong men / women science fiction love / action / drama military / nuclear weapons supernatural / extraterrestrial ocean / elements / weather action I'm a guy not easily moved (emotionally), I'm sorry to say; BUT I've NEVER watched this movie and NOT teared up over a certain scene (a heart-wrenching surprise I don't dare spoil)! A movie moment shared by two characters that's probably unparalleled by any other in the 1,000s of movies I've seen over the decades! Add to all this the fact that this movie has a couple of my favorites (Ed Harris and Michael Biehn), and if you like Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio she's great, too. PLUS ...

  • Better... Impossible

Inglés Excellent movie, one of the best movies of that time, unfortunately James Cameron did not want to remaster it to Bluray format. The Abyss is a true science fiction classic, ahead of its time, due to the underwater recording format. A movie that any true movie lover should have in their inventory.

  • Smartest DVD purchase I've made in a long time.!!

Arrived in a timely fashion and was exactly as described! Didn't even open the DVD because I'm admiring the packaging. Will soon want to see the action again. Did see it recently on TV copied on the PVR but the commercials were a real pain. It took four hours from start to finish. Then I made up my mind that that was going to be my next DVD purchase at the end of the first commercial. Smartest DVD purchase I've made in a long time.!!
