That is reason enough to learn "ALL ABOUT MANCALA" "Its History and How to Play" by Sue and Jon Hanson,published in 2003 by Happy Viking Crafts This 135 large size page book contains chapers covering Mancala (generic name) games played throughout the world. Most, not surprisingly, are two-row games, while some three & four row games are presented. Most rule sets are reasonably clear and sufficiently illustrated which permit interested players to actually play the ... Most, not surprisingly, are two-row games, while some three & four row games are presented. Most rule sets are reasonably clear and sufficiently illustrated which permit interested players to actually play the games using the rules and variations provided. Perhaps, it might be difficult at times to determine which games follow "official" & or serious tournament rules as opposed to lss formal or "house" rules. The authors, in some cases state that some games with official playing rules might suffer from various defects and thus offer alternative or even combination of rules to improve a game in their opinion. In any case, feel free to experiment with official ruls, viable alternatives and determine your own preferences. Of course, if you compete in standard mancala tourneys, then you must become familiar with official rules for the tourneys and understand the tactics and strategy employed in such games. With hundreds of Mancala games available, the authors chose a modest selection as only so many games/variants can be properly described in a non-encyclopedic work. But there are some very glaring omissions.For example,Toguz Kumalak,game from Kazakhstan(Toguz Xorgol in Kyrgyzstan)is a complex two row games consisting of 9 cups in each row with 9 seeds in each of the 18 cups,making 162 seeds in play.The rule set of this game is easy enough to understand and permits players of varying level of skill to play and to enjoy it.This view based on tournaments that I run for beginners and masters alike at Deskohrani (www.deskohrani.cz) & Czech Open (www.czechopen.net). Both of these major international events are basically MSOs (Mind Sports Olympiads)with a different name. {UK MSO, which takes place shortly inLondon,(www.boardability.com)has rights to MSO title} Another elite game not discussed by the authors is the very complicated African four-row game of 8 cups in each row called BAO. Though,only 64 seeds are used in this game, the rules for many people are difficult to understand.You might understand the rules if diagrams are extremely clear and very carefully explained, but most will be lost by the complex strategy and tactics employed in this game. Personally, I think most will do well just to remember the rules a week after learning them! This game is really for the very able but try to learn the mechanics in any case as you might be very pleased and surprised. Bao is often referred to as the "King" (why not the queen) of Mancala games. Analysis & calculation in this game is extremely difficult-this is a wonderful game indeed! The authors also provide some history and cultural points about some of thse games and variants which adds interest and life to this book.
