About this product

Product Information

When Sean Connery abandoned the James Bond series to seek out new challenges, he turned to director John Boorman's sci-fi project, ZARDOZ. Connery stars as Zed, one of a carefully bred race of supervisors, the Exterminators, who oversee the agricultural labor of the neanderthal Brutals, since in 2293, with most of the Earth's surface off-limits as a polluted Outlands, industrial society has been abandoned. All worship Zardoz, a huge flying stone head who makes periodic visits to Earth to pick up grain consignments and issue bizarre statements involving the male anatomy through the voice of Arthur Frayn (Niall Buggy). An increasingly skeptical Zed decides to stow away inside the head, which deposits him in the Vortex, a commune of scientists and intellectuals who are ruled by the ever-youthful and asexual Eternals. They capture Zed, allowing geneticist May (Sara Kestleman) to use him as a research subject for a limited period, but he begins to arouse more than scientific curiosity in the commune's supposedly nonsexual female population.

It's a cult classic that I couldn't find on U Tube or Netflix, so this was the only way to see it again.

Zardoz is about the weirdest and worst thought of movie made back in the day. Some love it, it has a cult following, some hate it, they think it's the worst movie ever made. Love it or hate it, it's a bizaar romp back to the strange days that were the 1970's. Personally, having seen it back then and, well, having also having grown up in those times, I had to see it again. There is a Message if you read between the lines.

  • Weirdness exemplified... Awesomeness as well.

If you've never experienced Zardoz.... You will be shocked at the incredible audacity of the weirdness in this film. John Boorman was given complete freedom to make this film however he wanted... And it's just amazing. If you appreciate and like unusual films... This will not disappoint. I love it because it IS so strange.

  • An interesting take on a future world

I'm told this was Sean Connery's second movie project after his James Bond movies, so I felt I had to see it. It shows a novel picture of a post-apocalyptic society, but according to the limited viewing window the movie offers, it looks like only about a hundred people were populating earth at that time. Budget and length-of-movie constraints, I suppose. This glimpse of a future society was certainly entertaining, but limited in scope.

  • Suddenly the future doesn't look quite as far away as it did when this was made. It's just that now they want to use "chips". Interesting concept.
