In the summer of 1956, a Los Angeles teenager named Kathy Kohner became enchanted with boys, surfing, and Malibu beaches. None of this might sound particularly newsworthy, though it became such when Kohner vividly captured all of it in her diary. She turned the volume over to her father, screenwriter Frederick Kohner (THE LADY AND THE MONSTER), who saw the material as a potential goldmine, given its colorful stories about such characters as surfers Moondoggie, Tubesteak and Kahuna. Kohner promptly turned the diary into a bestselling novel, woven around Gidget (amalgam of 'girl' and 'midget') - a fictional character based on Kathy. Sequels followed, as well as movies, two television series (one of which helped launch the career of Sally Field), a meteoric rise in the popularity of surfing, and much more. This documentary from director Brian L. Gillogly reexamines the "Gidget phenomenon." It includes newly-shot interviews with Field, the late Cliff Robertson, actor Gregory Harrison, director Paul Wendkos,Kohner herself (here credited by her married name, Kathy Zuckerman) and many others.

The disc arrived sooner than expected which was a pleasant surprise! It was well packed and in very good physical condition as listed. I put it on that night and it played flawlessly for 55mins but would go no further. Whoever sold it to them didn't tell them it had a manufacturing defect - very sneaky. Seller refunded my money quickly and I ordered another copy elsewhere. I had a problem with the movie Billy Budd last year where I ordered it 3x and couldn't get a playable copy.

    The Pioneering Legend of Women's Surfers

    This is an informative look at the mythology of a surf icon and at the real woman herself . It is 60 minutes long and will hold the attention of those interested in the surfing sport and it's history . It is just newly released and worth the price on availability on Ebay . It seems to be an open region dvd .

    Great for surfers!

    I bought this dvd as I was shopping and the title caught my eye. The movie was a great insight to the beach scene at the time. But not what I expected. If you're a surfer, it might interest you.
