The Black Unicorn by Terry Brooks
Terry Brooks has long been one of my big favorites in the fantasy genre. I've read most of his Shannara-books, but somehow his Landover-books has eluded me. I read the first book many years ago, and I remember it fondly as a funny and exciting book, but somehow I never got around to reading the next installment in the series. That is, until I recently saw a hardcover-version of The Black Unicorn on ebay. I decided it was finally time to read the second book in the series. The story is set in the magic kingdom of Landover, which the lawyer Ben Holiday bought for one million dollars in the first book. Ben reigns there as the king, but the evil wizard Meeks returns and uses his magic to change Ben's appearance. Then Meeks transforms himself into Ben and takes over the kingdom. Now Ben must ... Now Ben must find a way to make his friends believe that he is actually Ben and take back his kingdom. At the same time, sightings of a black unicorn creates unrest in the land. And Meeks seems very eager to capture the unicorn. This is not one of Terry Brooks' best work. It's a decent and entertaining fantasy-novel, but it lacks that extra quality that makes you remember the book for years afterwards. It could have used a little more action. Some books can be great even without any action, but that's not the case here. At times I thought the narrative got a little bit long winded, but not often enough to make the book seem boring. The most annoying part was how dense Ben was. He didn't realize the secret behind his transformation until right at the end, but I realized it even before I was halfway through the book. Personally I prefer the Shannara-books, and the Word and Void trilogy, but the Landover-series is still a recommended read. Terry Brooks is a great writer, but he was still relatively new to the craft when he wrote this book, and that shows. Still, The Black Unicorn is a decent read for anyone who enjoys fantasy. Specially those who like fantasy books that includes the present world. But I also got the impression that I would have liked the book a lot more if I'd been younger.

Terry Brooks has done it again. I saw this book and thought "I've read all his books. There can't be anything else. Have I missed one?" Well, I did. Much to my regret. Now I am taken back again to a time of Magic, Faeries, Sorcerers, Elves and Demons. I was lost in The Magic Kingdom For Sale series and now I am there again. His books are outstanding. Comparable to The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Ring series. There is nothing like it in my mind.Terry Brooks has done it again. I saw this book and thought "I've read all his books. Great for older kids
I bought the entire series for my daughter to read over the summer. She absolutely loves them and can't put them down until she is finished. Great thing to see a child voluntarily read over the summer.
