Originally the lyrics and musical landscape of LULU was sketched out by Lou Reed for a theatrical production in Berlin, that was inspired by the plays of German expressionist Frank Wedekind, but after coming together with the Metallica for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009 all guilty parties knew they wanted to make more music together. Lou was inspired enough by that performance to ask the band to join him in taking his theatrical LULU piece to the next level and record this 10 track album.

Another Good Metallica Collaboration
With the exception of the rating above, I have heard nothing but bad things about "Lulu". I bought this the first day of release after reading about it in Rolling Stone. I have to admit, I'm unfamiliar with the "Lulu" plays it is based on. On its own, it is a worthy addition to the Metallica catalog. The best part of it is the strong bass performance by Robert Trujilo. I complained about that in my review of "Death Magnetic", but here he is rich, deep, and full. Especially in the intro to "Cheat On Me". At first it was unsettling for me to hear Metal's Alpha Male (James Hetfield) taking a back seat to Lou Reed, but here it works. Lou Reed's performance compliments the band as though he has been a part of Metallica for years. The 5 ... With the exception of the rating above, I have heard nothing but bad things about "Lulu". Mr. Lou Reed continues to be a strong influence in music today. His powerful lyrics backed by the pounding beat of metalica fusses this cd into one of the best in my collection. lou is a god.
