"A romance of beauty and power from Italy to India . . . so delightful an homage to Renaissance magic and wonder." Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World "This is 'history' jubilantly mixed with postmodernist magic realism." Joyce Carol Oates, The New York Review of Books "A baroque whirlwind of a narrative . . . [Rushdie helps] us escape from the present into a dreamlike past that ultimately makes us more aware of the dangers and illusions of our everyday lives." Alan Cheuse, Chicago Tribune "Brilliant . . . Rushdie's sumptuous mixture of history and fable is magnificent." Ursula K. Le Guin, The Guardian (London) "For Rushdie, as for the artists he writes about, the pen is a magician's wand. . . . One of his best [novels]." John Sutherland, Financial Times "[A] prodigious fever dream of a book." Lisa Shea, Elle "Beyond its magical razzle-dazzle lays a work of steely contemporary resonance, rich in slyly metafictional allusions." Thank you so so very much for working with me! This seller is incredible in my book (no pun intended). I don't think I have ever had a seller ship an item and I received it 2 (yes TWO) days later. So this seller shipped lightening fast, packaged this collectors-item book so so well and the price was very fair. I would gladly us this seller first for any item listed that I was looking for. • Eh....

I heard a review of this novel on NPR. The author sounded interesting and intelligent and I thought the genre of "magical realism" sounded cool, so I ordered this book soon thereafter. I finished it quickly (mainly just to get it over with,) and I was not very impressed. The author has an annoying voice and way of describing the fictional world. There didn't seem to be any emotional evocations for me personally, I just didn't care; the story was not moving. Also there didn't seem to be any philosophical meanings embedded in the text, it was uninteresting to speculate on meanings...

  • Beautifully written, but not an easy read.

This tale seems to go on and on without much action. Authors command of the English language is impressive but it is not light reading, you have to pay attention or you get lost in the verbage.
