Reviews
"Helen and Scott Nearing are the great-grandparents of the back-to-the-land movement, having abandoned the city in 1932 for a rural life based on self-reliance, good health, and a minimum of cash. . . . Fascinating, timely, and wholly useful, a mix of the Nearings' challenging philosophy and expert counsel on practical skills." --The Washington Post Book World "A prophetic account of the creation of a self-sufficient little Walden . . . that has been an underground bible for the city-weary." -- Newsweek  "The Nearings are plain daylight, solid prose, sound information." -- The New York Times Book Review  "As close to a Walden for out times as we're likely to see."  -- Yankee Magazine

This tome majestically illustrates the importance of planning, self-control and practical work expectations, even if you do not immediately launch into a self-sufficient lifestyle. Over these years, I practiced and celebrated levels of improvement in my home garden, coupled with healthy eating as espoused in LTGL. In 2018, it is all the rage to dine at restaurants that offer "farm-to-table" food service. LTGL was first to trumpet the positive energy of eating from the garden, except on fare that the diner selects from ones own garden plot. • Oldie but goodie

for an older book it is surprisingly engaging. If you are a gardener or person who likes or dreams of living closer to the earth and nature you will enjoy. Content is of course, dated, but interesting information and history.
