BOSTON LEGAL, a wry courtroom television show that walks the line between drama and comedy, is the creation of perennial hit-maker David E. Kelly (ALLY MCBEAL, PICKET FENCES). BOSTON LEGAL revolves around the Boston litigation law firm of Crane, Poole, & Schmidt, in particular two eccentric and flawed attorneys, Alan Shore and Denny Crane. Shore, an unscrupulous and wily ambulance chaser and womanizer (played, with sly charm by James Spader) finds an uneasy alliance with Crane, a bombastic, self-aggrandizing, and occasionally batty elder lawyer (William Shatner in an Emmy-winning performance). Despite their ethical and emotional deficiencies, Shore and Crane usually find themselves fighting on the right side, as they take up cases that no one else is willing to touch. The 17-episode first season kicks off with quirky flair, full of oddball situations including: Shore, on a dare, taking the case of an African-American actress denied the role of Annie; Crane caught having an affair with the firm's biggest client; Shore representing an ex-lover who had attempted to murder him; Shore defending a millionaire CEO caught shoplifting, and a Santa fired for being a transvestite. Adding even more mayhem to the madcap cases, the sexual chemistry at the firm begins to boil over, and both Shore and Crane find themselves compromised with the various female lawyers.

Missed Boston Legal when it originally aired. Saw reviews on this series and decided to get the first season. This show is phenomenal! Funny, thought provoking, entertaining. A must see! Would highly recommend! William Shatner and James Spader are fantastic together.

Forensic and reality shows may be all the rage on television these days, but the tried and true law genre has never been stronger. Since the days of Perry Mason, audiences everywhere have been captivated by courtroom appearances and have waited with baited breath for the bang of the gavel. That's not to say that every show to stand before a judge has been met with passing grades, but when you get the right formula these dramas turn to magic. Of course, the "right formula" consists of a great cast and even better writing. Enter David E. Kelley. Kelley is well known in TV land. He started out writing for L.A. Law, helped create Doogie Howser, and was the frontrunner for Alley McBeal, The Practice, and Chicago Hope. Having been a lawyer he brings a certain authenticity to ... Having been a lawyer he brings a certain authenticity to many of his works and his particular brand of humor could probably be best described as tongue in cheek. His latest series, Boston Legal is no different from the rest of his portfolio in terms of quality and quirkiness. While Boston Legal may be the new(er) kid on the block, it actually has ties to The Practice and is basically a spin off. The lead characters: Denny Crane (William Shatner), Alan Shore (James Spader), Sally Heep (Lake Bell), and Tara Wilson (Rhona Mitra) were all introduced at some point or another on that show. After sitting through the entire first season of Boston Legal it's easy to see where some restructuring went on as the team realized what worked and what didn't. Coming off of the long running Practice this show needed to shake things up a bit. On one hand it tackles deep moral issues that plague the news headlines for better or worse. On the other it offers a sexually charged sense of irreverent humor that can be downright abusive at times. In between is where Boston Legal finds its dramatic balance and dark, quirky charm. In the end Boston Legal is a great lawyer show with some interesting characters and its own sense of style. Shatner, Spader, and Bergen all turn out fantastic performances and really make this show something special. While the dark humor is something of a guilty pleasure, at times it can be a little too naughty for its own good. There are some episodes (near the beginning of the season especially) where dramatic points were missed thanks to cheeky humor. Kelley and company quickly find their stride though and Boston Legal becomes an addicting show that is hard to turn off. If you enjoyed the Practice, or any of Kelley's other works you'll definitely want to check this show out if you haven't already been watching it on TV. As far as spin-off shows go . . . this one currently has to be one for the record books. Alan Shore (James Spader) is a character that truly can never be replicated. While this character got his start on the Practice, putting him in a law-firm with Denny Crane (William Shatner) and allowing these two individuals to have the relationship that they do . . . well . . . it truly is a recipe for success. Besides, can anything compare with Denny Crane going fishing with a shot gun? And how the writers of this show can work in a line where William Shatner has to use the term "cling-ons" -- oh my gosh!!!! Oh wait! AND to have William Shatner's character lean over and say to James Spader's character: "You look pretty in pink". How DO the writers do ... As far as spin-off shows go . . . this one currently has to be one for the record books. Alan Shore (James Spader) is a character that truly can never be replicated. While this character got his start on the Practice, putting him in a law-firm with Denny Crane (William Shatner) and allowing these two individuals to have the relationship that they do . . . well . . . it truly is a recipe for success. And, according to the message boards, there have been about 78 actors who have appeared on Boston Legal who have also appeared in one of the many Star Trek shows that have been on the air!! Keep an eye out . . . they are there!! Eventually (if my dreams come true) there will be an episode with Leonard Nimoy.

Its funny, dramatic, shocking, and once you start watching it becons to you to watch every episode. Season 1 gets better with each episode. Generally fast paced, you will enjoy the slap stick humor and casualness of this series. This series main lead is Alan Shore played with a cynical air by James Spader. His half crazied senior partner Denny Crane played by William Shatner, who proves he can play something else than Captain James T Kirk of the Starship Enterprise. Both actors have won Emmys for these roles in this series What you get here is one of the Best legal shows on TV. It covers issues with humor and human nature-which is also funny. Then it also can be hard hitting points of law which will intrigue those Legal eagles who love to water cooler debate shows on the next day... and if the last episode on this DVD set does not haunt you-you ...
