The son of a New York City police officer, Gavin O'Connor serves as director and co-screenwriter of this tale of family, loyalty, and corruption. The NYPD runs in the Tierney family's blood. Francis Tierney Sr. (Jon Voight) is the Chief of Detectives, his son Ray (Edward Norton) is a detective, and his son Francis (Noah Emmerich) is in charge of the precinct where his son-in-law, Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell), serves. When four officers who work in Francis's house die in a drug bust, Ray, a former wunderkind who has been lying low working on missing persons cases for the past few years, is appointed to investigate. But as he starts to put the pieces together, Ray realizes that all signs indicate there are some dirty police in the city, and worse yet, he may actually be related to some of them. Faced with the toughest decision of his life, Ray has to choose between his loyalty to his family and to the department, and decide what is right.A stellar cast supports this film, with strong performances from the four lead players and from the supporting actors who portray both criminals and police officers. Voight is the quintessential Irish-American father and cop who has risen through the ranks; he will do whatever it takes to protect his family. Norton and Emmerich play off each other well as brothers who have taken slightly different paths while dealing with their own personal heartaches. Farrell, meanwhile, convincingly plays Jimmy as a loving family man whose choices have led him to the brink of desperation. Lake Bell co-stars as Jimmy's wife and sister to Francis and Ray.

The Best Cop Film I've Seen In Years.
Hands down, this was the best cop film I've seen in years. Although there is a great deal of craziness, going on in this film. The actors in this film seem to be sincere in playing their roles as written and are right on target with the script. This film tries to create a nuance of something, but it's really hard to nail down. I think the film was supposed to cause you to really think how important honesty and integrity are in life as seen through the eyes of Ed Norton's character. Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Noah Emmerich, and Jon Voight all deliver great performances. There are many intense scenes throughout the movie, and Norton and Farrell match them with their own intensity. Voight is believable and realistic as the patriarch of the family of cops and the chief, trying to keep his ... Hands down, this was the best cop film I've seen in years. Everyone will see this film in a different light, but the irony of the film makes it more interesting since the characterizations are less predictable. Maybe that's why the director intentionally created the film this way; to show how chaotic and unpredictable a single second in a NYPD cop's life really is. 4/5 for action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, and story-line. Good flick worth the time
OK it's not 'Gone With the Wind' but it held my interest from beginning to end. A good story nicely directed well played by a good cast of professional actors there is a real sense of gritty reality to this film. That is very much helped by excellent photography and great use of location shooting in a very real New York. I grew up here and recognized many of the off the beaten tracks locales and that really helped make it seem real. A movie that faces the fact that even the best among us can sink pretty low.OK it's not 'Gone With the Wind' but it held my interest from beginning to end. Slow start, but good acting
I was ready for this film to blow me away. Too many characters lead to a confusing progression of events. The story took over an hour to really congeal. If I had not been watching with another person who was much more enthusiastic about the first hour, I may have turned of the film due to frustration about the progress of the film. I watched the entire feature and the remaining time in the film was an improvement, but not worth the disconnected feel I had from the first part. The star power acting, was good, but not enough to save the movie. Grade: C-/D+I was ready for this film to blow me away. Too many characters lead to a confusing progression of events.
