About this product

Product Information

After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in a remote part of the ocean floor, a team of divers on a prototype underwater oil rig are pressed into service by the U.S. Navy in a rescue attempt. When a hurricane cuts off contact between the surface and the underwater depths, the crew begin to see evidence of a strange, possibly alien intelligence at work. While chief Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) bickers with his ex-wife and boss (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Navy commander begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the mysterious alien life and threatens to use a recovered nuclear weapon to destroy everything. James Cameron's undersea epic is a tale of sacrifice and hope in an amazing alien landscape that covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Featuring landmark visual effects but plagued by production difficulties, the cast and crew were stretched to the breaking point and THE ABYSS became one of the most expensive films ever made in its time, but the final result is a remarkable blend of action and human drama. Scenes cut from the theatrical version, including a number of special effects sequences involving huge tidal waves threatening the cities of the world, are restored in the Special Edition versions.

  • Clearly a movie that will Impact you over & over again!

If you have never seen this movie before in your life time, then please read what I have to say. While this is only my opinion I hope that my words will lead you to either viewing it and or to help you make the decision as to buying or renting a copy for yourself. This movie for its' time period still possess all the ingredients that make movies great! It has lots of action, mystery, suspense, all which are added in balance to reveal a perfect movie. While I do not want to give the movie away as to what it is about or what happens. All I can say is that this movie is not your typical Good Intentions Bad Judgement film. Please rent, watch or buy it for yourself and you will see that this movie is truly a keeper!

  • In my TOP 10! A must-OWN, WELL-rounded, ALL-in-1 movie!

In my TOP 10! A must-OWN, WELL-rounded, ALL-in-1 movie! Does it GET any better!? A James Cameron masterpiece! This movie could appeal to ANYONE, 'cause it has: strong men / women science fiction love / action / drama military / nuclear weapons supernatural / extraterrestrial ocean / elements / weather action I'm a guy not easily moved (emotionally), I'm sorry to say; BUT I've NEVER watched this movie and NOT teared up over a certain scene (a heart-wrenching surprise I don't dare spoil)! A movie moment shared by two characters that's probably unparalleled by any other in the 1,000s of movies I've seen over the decades! Add to all this the fact that this movie has a couple of my favorites (Ed Harris and Michael Biehn), and if you like Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio she's great, too. PLUS ...
