First and foremost, it’s a wonderful musical satire that pokes fun at everything from romantic naiveté to realistic pompousness although the romantics get the worst of it. And this performance is considered by critics and fans alike as the very best of all the productions over the years. For starters, the music is superb -- by Leonard Bernstein who conducts -- energetic, exciting, melodic, engaging. His best work next to West Side Story. The overture is one of the most famous in modern music. What also distinguishes this production is the phenomenal cast of singers: Jerry Hadley as the quintessentially innocent Candide; June Anderson as Candide’s love Cunegonde; Christa Ludwig as the Old Lady; Nicolai Gedda, the great opera singer, as the Governor; ... With the sobering power of reason to guide them, their love conquers all in the end. Other notable songs are "Glitter and Be Gay," "What a Day for an Auto Da Fe," "I Am Easily Assimilated," and "What's the Use?" Published in 1956 and based on Voltaire's work of the same name, Candide was a collaboration of several writing "greats": book by Lillian Hellman, and lyrics by Richard Wilbur, John Latouche, and Dorothy Parker. Poetry never had a better moment being sung.

OK , but long.
Years ago we saw this comedy play live on stage and it was tremendous fun. This DVD was a concert performance with singers and orchestra on stage in a concert hall ,so this was disappointing by comparison . All performers were professional , but at 2 and a half hours , it was quite long , but good value for those who like concert performances .

The One to Have!
In my view this is THE Candide to have, much better than any staged version. Bernstein himself at the helm, with Anderson, Ludvig and Gedda having the time of their lives in their unfamiliar roles, plus the eye and ear-candy provided byJerry Hadley.
