    About this product

    Product Information

An excellent television mini-series based on Elspeth Huxley's much-loved memoir of her upbringing in East Africa, where her family hewed a farm from the rugged land in 1913. Growing up amidst the same pastoral loveliness that so inspired Danish novelist Isak Dinesen, the little girl and her family struggle with savage animals, wild natural forces, and a murder.

        A wonderful series

A very good series that documents the events in Africa at the start of the twentieth century from all sides as seen by a very smart child. It's brilliantly filmed with a lot of beautiful views of Africa and its wildlife as seen by everyone - it's pretty much historically accurate without a "good" or "bad" bias - it just shows you the events as remembered by Elspeth. A young child's view of the world tells you a lot about the world. It's based on the book but doesn't duplicate the book so it's easy to watch and very good.

      • Holds Up Well

Saw this on PBS when it first came out. Then bought the VHS tapes. Now, the DVD. Represents some of the best productions to come out of 70's/80s UK studios. Well acted believable characters. Wish they had been able to film more episodes. Need the two-DVD set to see all seven episodes. DVD #2 has some video compression issues, but not so much that it's a deal-breaker.

      • Beautiful story of an English family in East Africa

This is a fantastic story of an English family making a new start in Africa. They form bonds with the African people and learn the different ways they live compared to them as they build their coffee plantation. They build harmonious relationships with most people, even other English people. Elspeth is the daughter and she if wonderful, as well as Haley Mills as her mother. The DVD was presented as like new and it is completely perfect. Very satisfied!

      • Good, entertaining series.

I didn't mean to say it is better than I expected--I saw it years ago and it is good as I remember

      • Appears to be a well crafted series.

I sent it and other DVDs to my daughter as a birthday present, so I didn't get to watch it.
