Synopsis
"One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories." -- The Guardian In this gripping novel set in an insular fishing community, Inspector Maigret must navigate an impenetrable subculture to solve a murder "It was indeed a photograph, a picture of a woman. But the face was completely hidden, scribbled all over in red ink. Someone had tried to obliterate the head, someone very angry. The pen had bitten into the paper. There were so many criss-crossed lines that not a single square millimetre had been left visible. On the other hand, below the head, the torso had not been touched. A pair of large breasts. A light-coloured silk dress, very tight and very low cut." Sailors don't talk much to other men, especially not to policemen. But after Captain Fallut's body is found floating near his trawler, they all mention the Evil Eye when they speak of the Ocean's voyage., "A writer as comfortable with reality as with fiction, with passion as with reason." --John Le Carré In this gripping novel set in an insular fishing community, Inspector Maigret must navigate an impenetrable subculture to solve a murder "It was indeed a photograph, a picture of a woman. Thanks so much! Another great item from one of my favorite sellers. Item just as described and arrived in perfect condition. US Games decks always packaged in nice and attractive sturdy boxes, not flimsy throw aways. Thanks so much WOB for offering gently used books, decks, etc., at such a great value. To find gently used items looking for a new home is one of my ways, not only to save money, but to recycle. Appreciate this seller very much :)

This prompts Maigret to convince his wife to change their vacation plans to instead go to Fecamp...the scene of the crime and where the sailor is being held for the murder. A word of warning about Maigret ...
