    • Useful Book on the Zone System of Photography

This book is very dated but it provides very useful information for someone who wants to try taking and developing black and white film.

    • Necessary Understanding to What Zone System really is

Understanding true Black and White photography is not complete unless one delves into mystery of the Zone System of light. With a good understanding of how to find your exposure value first and then your normal development, you can manipulate the various zones of light to accomplish creative expressions of your picture. However, one important point you must remember: you will need a 1 degree spot meter for accurately judging your shadow and highlight values. This book along with Ansel Adams "The Negative" is a good study and read in acquiring basic understanding of the Zone System.

    • Excellent book for the film photographer!

Great book, Fred Picker provides a very in depth and scientific approach to film photography that is still relevant today. Of course many of the things discussed are a bit out of date, but this is a great place to start to build your film photography knowledge base!

    • Outdated references, but timeless advice

The book refers to some specific products no longer in existence but other than that, it offrers advanced techniques of use today. Digital users with no darkroom experience may or may not 'get it'. Oh well.
