What pulled me towards this particular coin was the almost perfect shine and attention focused on the preservation of artistic detail during the manufacturing process. Also 1987 was the year I started school in South Africa, so in order for us to change/better/improve our fabrication we need education. And I'm still learning every single day. So I wont bore you with factual "thesis styled" descriptions of luster polish/brilliance and split grades. But since we are talking about a coin, remember MS stands for "Mint State". A perfect mint state would be graded as MS-70. Specimen Proof (SP-70 or PF-70. Superb Mint (MS-67). Gem Mint State (MS-65).Choice Mint(MS-63).Typical Mint State (MS-60).Very Choice / About Uncirculated (AU-58) But if you were wondering, here we go :) When there are ... However, an intermediate value may be appropriate when the difference between the obverse & reverse is significant, especially if the reverse is lower. A coin graded MS-60/61 would be considered to have an overall grade of MS-60, and another at MS-65/63 could be considered to have an overall grade of MS-63 etc. Choice / About Uncirculated (AU-55). About Uncirculated (AU-50). This coin however was not anywhere close to such low ratings considering it's almost as old as what I am! The Britain Pound, 1987, is Gem Proof, and only 89,000 ever minted (produced) which does improve the rarity of the coin significantly of course. Proofs Are The Supreme Examples Of The Art Of Coin-making. All Coins Are Made by Having Blank Discs Of The Metal Struck With Enormous Force Between Dies. This Heavy Blow Impresses The Design On Each Side Of The Blank And Also Rounds The Edge. Proof Coins Are Made Similarly But There Are Many Painstaking Differences From Business Strike Coins. Proof Blanks Are Specially Treated, Hand-Polished, And Cleaned To Ensure High-Quality Strikes. The Blanks Are Then Fed Into Presses Fitted With Specially Polished Dies And Struck at Least Twice To Ensure Sharp, High Relief. The Coins Are Then Carefully Packaged To Showcase And Preserve Their Exceptional Finish. Cameo Coins Have Exquisite Frosted Relief. The Dies Are First Blasted With Hard Particles To Create a Frosted Effect. Each Proof Coin Is Minted With Extra Pressure For The Finish Detail, Afterwards They Are Individually Inspected And Are Not Touched Except With Gloved Hands. Even The Air Is Filtered To Exclude a Dust Free Environment. It is a well preserved and looked after coin, and I'm sure it will have a permanent place in our families collections for many generations still to come.
