About this product

Product Information

Alex Cox (REPO MAN) directed this stylized adaptation of Jorge Luis Borges labyrinthine detective story about a totalitarian city of the future plagued by a rash of bizarre crimes. Peter Boyle stars as Lonnrot, a decidedly even headed detective prone to philosophizing and Christopher Eccleston is his nemesis, Red Scarlach, whom Lonnrot believes could be behind these ritualistic crimes. Set in a surreal landscape that provokes Lonnrot's philosophical musings and leads him through mystical cabals and conspiracies within conspiracies, DEATH AND THE COMPASS is a remarkable adaptation of Borges' story, and a fascinating, often exhilarating film.

Since I already love stories by Jorge Luis Borges it would have been hard for me not to like the movie, although it's a shame it wasn't another of his stories, several of which I like better. On first viewing I wasn't sure I liked this particular production all that much partly because the sound was not as good as it could have been and it was put together in a slightly confusing manner, but even with the changes from the original the movie was pretty good, some of the acting was very good (Zunz) and being "stylized" didn't really ruin it. The short "Spider web" also made it worthwhile... it is more true to the original story. I think if not for the sound issues I might have rated it as excellent. I am considering doing one or two of Borges' stories myself as a short movie... perhaps the ...

  • What a twist...

This was an interesting film, to say the least. I bought it because Peter Boyle and Christopher Eccleston are two of my favorite actors, but I didn't know what to expect. It's set in a surrealistic future but smacks of pulp fiction detective stories. It's a bit on the low-bidget side, but visually interesting, well directed and well acted by these two. I suspected how it would end, but was curious how it would play out. I have to admit I enjoyed it and thought I should lend it to some friends. But then something happened that made the whole movie seem 10 times better in retrospect... There is an "Independent Short" film in the bonus section of the dvd titled "Spiderweb." There was no mention of what it was about or who was in it. Just a title. It was getting late and I wavered ...
