Based on his near-career-ending experience with the box-office disaster DARLING LILI, Blake Edwards fashioned a corrosive behind-the-scenes satire of the business in which he had long plied his trade.The film stars Richard Mulligan as Felix Farmer, a once-successful director whose career is on the slide because of the colossal failure of his $30 million G-rated musical. In desperation he hatches a plan to revive his career: Buy back the film and remake it, adding new pornographic footage to render it a more marketable box-office commodity. He believes that the key to the film's success will be the willingness of his ex-wife, Sally Miles (Julie Andrews), to dispense with her sweetly wholesome image and bare her breasts onscreen. To reach his goal, Farmer has to wade through a river of egomanical producers, wildly pretentious directors, knife-wielding industry gossips, sneaky editors, and even a dissipated doctor--or quack, as he prefers to be called. A broad, hugely entertaining attack on the hand that fed him, Edwards's film is among his best, with hilarious scenery chewing by William Holden (in his final film appearance), Loretta Swit, Larry Hagman, Richard Mulligan, Robert Preston, Robert Vaughn, Robert Webber, Robert Loggia, and no other Roberts among its seeming cast of thousands.

They asked me to type one, so here it is.
The last time i watched this movie, it was a fairly new video (when videos themselves were fairly new) and i was 8 years old. It isn't really quite fair for me to type this review, as the reason i purchased it was as a present to my mother since we accidently recorded over it a long time ago. I'll type it anyway, because i DID in fact buy it and enjoyed it anyway. It's just a movie that i remember from my youth (my parents were pretty lenient) and wanted to see again so i could remember the whole thing. Still is a great movie, the parts i remember hadn't changed (wonder what's up with that?) and i was a little more amused at the film now then i was two decades ago. In fact, some things make a LOT more sense now (wonder why THAT is?). I got the VHS tape because.... i dunno. Just decided to ... Thought it may just be the right 'feel' to get the video even though i decided a while back that if there were any more movies bought i'd get them in DVD format so they would last longer than i would and i wouldn't have to worry about tape degredation (something that seems to have happened to most of the tapes we own from around that era anyway). And that's pretty much all i got for this one. Would i recommend this movie to others? I suppose. But it's not a movie EVERYone is going to like. If you're a fan of Julie Andrews, it's going to surprise you to say the least. If you're a Robert Preston fan, it's probably NOT surprising. Same can be said for Blake Edwards - right along his line of thinking. Pretty amusing overall, and what some can arguably say is an accurate description of how Hollywood works regardless. For the younger set, the movie it closest 'resembles' from the past decade would be Get Shorty. They are similar in the subtle nuances and satire they provide. And i'm done with this guide.
