Ensign Pulver
This is the follow up to Mr. Roberts. It is funny and just a nice clean movie. I have no idea why they never put it on DVD or stopped making it.They did make Mr. Roberts on DVD, which I bought. Its hard to find a nice family movie. I did record it years ago from TV but I wanted a good copy of it, too bad they dont show it anymore, its worth watching.

follow up to Mister Rogers
Not quite the caliber of Mister Rogers, almost tries too hard. Good laughs with Burl Ives. Not available on DVD yet so had to purchase on VCR, will probably not replace if ever it is.

Ensign Pulver (VHS, 1994)
The 1964 sequel to MISTER ROBERTS. This movie featured an all-star cast of characters in this comedy about a tyrannical ships captain (Burl Ives) who runs this little cargo ship, THE RELUCTANT, just like Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty. He is a hardnosed man with a chip on his shoulder for everyone because his mother was a cleaning lady and poor. This was his way of being a "Big Man", too full of hate to be human. In addition, his miserable existence is aggravated by the fact that his ship is just one of many seagoing "delivery trucks" that plod the backwaters of the war, with their only enemies being monotony and boredom. By never allowing any sort of humanity to his crew, and by keeping them from liberty, or even the simplest of pleasures like swimming, he has managed to make ... The 1964 sequel to MISTER ROBERTS. When the Pharmacists Mate, Bruno, receives news that his young son was killed in a freak accident at Coney Island, the Captain denies him leave to go home for the funeral. Only the ships doctor, Walter Matthau, and Ensign Pulver (Robert Walker Jr.) keep the lid on this potential powder keg. All of this changes when the Captain is confronted by Bruno who is out of his mind with grief. A terrible storm is raging and Pulver disarms Bruno, but the Captain falls overboard. Pulver throws a raft to the Captain, but he can't swim. Pulver then jumps in and saves his life. After weeks adrift, and all searches called off, washed up on a deserted island they find a downed American airplane and it's pilot and two nurses. The Captain is delirious and needs an emergency appendectomy. Operating by instructions from the "Doc" over a radio, Pulver saves the captain's life. Eight weeks later the Captain is returned to his ship only to find that a lot of changes have taken place during his absence. The men have had liberty, and were allowed to have fun. In return, the ship has operated more efficiently and handled more cargo, and in every way has out performed it's past records. The captain tries to be harder than ever and Ensign Pulver tells him what a jerk he has been and warns him to get off the ship. Not because anyone would hurt him, but because he would die there, not being able to thank everyone for their efforts to save his life. The Captain relents and asks for transfer.
