His time as a director may have seen Spike Lee gently creep away from the controversial material that made his name, but he hasn't lost his eye for creating an entertaining spectacle; INSIDE MAN is a deliriously constructed crime caper designed to keep audiences guessing right up until the final moments. The plot, written by Russell Gewirtz, works from a devilishly simple premise and spins off on a number of interesting and creative tangents. Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) and his partner Bill Mitchell (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are sent to deal with a hostage situation at a bank in lower Manhattan. Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) is a masked man holding a number of people hostage in the bank while its chairman, Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer), worries about a secret document he has hidden in a safety deposit box in the vaults. Madeline White (Jodie Foster) is a sassy power broker who Case hires to enter the melee in order to get his mysterious object out of the box and out of the bank. As Gewirtz gradually confounds viewers' expectations by threading neat twists and turns into the plot, Lee briefly--perhaps too briefly for hardened Spike fans--returns to the racial themes he overtly tackled in his earlier work. The director uses a number of visual tricks to keep the action humming, such as spectacular overhead shots and grainy, darkly hued posthumous interview clips with the hostages, but INSIDE MAN is essentially a fun popcorn movie executed with an intelligence usually lacking in the genre. While many of the themes--cops are racist, people in power are corrupt, the innocent are persecuted--may be hackneyed, it's testament to Lee's stature as a filmmaker that he manages to pull an engrossing and enjoyable romp from such ostensibly standard subject matter.

    A smart, witty, edgy action drama like you never seen!!!!

    One of Spike Lee's best film's, Inside Man, delivers with powerhouse performanaces from Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Clive Ownes. Based in his usual settins in New York City, Spike Lee shows you a serious hostage situation in five perspectives, one from the criminal mastermind himself, one from the lead dectective, one from the banker who is the victim of the circumstances, the hostages themselves, and the mysterious woman who comes in for the banker. All of these perspective clash to a suprising conclusion that will leave pondering if the crime itself was of random coincidence or something further personal. The movie also gives an test of determining which of the four (*the detective, the criminal, the mysterious woman, and the banker) are a true hero or smart villian.

    Worth watching.

    Solid acting. Unique heist concept. Worth watching. I just would have liked for there to have been more history or connection for how or why the theives were targeting Case. How did they know? More background on Clive's character would have been nice. I also would have liked to have seen his face a little more. I suppose it's not all that important, but I just feel like there was something missing there. And Jodie Foster's character, I would have liked to have known a little more about her. She kind of reminds me of Harvey Keitel's character as "the cleaner" in "Pulp Fiction". Overall the film worked. I think I will keep this one in my collection, but it's not one of those phenomenal, must see films unless you just love this genre.

    Inside Man

    Spike Lee, as always, does not disappoint. This is a sit on the edge of your chair heist movie, with some well done New York and Social Commentary overlays. Acting is outstanding, D. Washington, C. Owen, always wonderful, but Jodie Foster steals the movie. It's clever, well written, well directed, well acted and cleverly photographed. I recommend watching it twice, once listening to Spike Lee's commentary (it's like having your own lecture - in fact he teaches at NYU's film school and must be wonderful to take for a course). It bears re-watching, which is one of the reasons that I chose to own my own copy.
