About this product

Product Information

The music of the Rolling Stones has lit up the soundtrack to so many Martin Scorsese films ("Gimme Shelter" has appeared in no less than three of his features--GOODFELLAS, CASINO, and THE DEPARTED) that it's little surprise to find the director teaming up with the legendary rockers for this concert recording. SHINE A LIGHT begins with a few glimpses of the preparation that went into the recording of the show, which was staged over two nights at New York City's Beacon Theatre in 2006. Scorsese also includes some candid footage of the Stones doing a pre-show meet-and-greet with guests Bill and Hillary Clinton, which highlights some of the different personality traits in the band. Keith Richards and Ron Wood are the clowns, always goofing around; Mick Jagger is the consummate professional, always polite to a fault; Charlie Watts caries a real air of dignity, as befits someone who enjoys a dual career as a noted jazz musician. The bulk of the movie is dedicated to the multi-camera shoot at the Beacon, which captures the Stones playing some of their biggest hits and a few lesser-known numbers. Special guests such as Jack White, Buddy Guy, and Christina Aguilera are ushered on at various points in the show, and the concert footage is broken up by some amusing vintage footage of the band. By using so many cameras, Scorsese captures a side of the Stones that is rarely seen, such as Watts turning to camera and puffing out his cheeks and Richards offering encouraging words to Jack White as he exits the stage. SHINE A LIGHT provides a welcome glimpse into the Stones' world at this advanced stage in their career, and continues Scorsese's obsession (see also: NO DIRECTION HOME and THE LAST WALTZ) with documenting some of the most influential characters in rock & roll.

  • At The Top Of Their Game

"Shine a Light" is Martin Scorsese's second real concert film after 1978's "The Last Waltz", which by now is generally acknowledged as a masterpiece. I really hope we will see more concert films from Scorsese in the future, because "Shine a Light" is further excellence from him. If all, or even a significant number of concert films were filmed with such skill and exuded such energy, there would be far more of them made and far more released theatrically. "Shine a Light" is a concert film. I'm not sure I'd call it a documentary on the Rolling Stones so much as a filming (a brilliant filming) of an especially good concert they played recently. Scorsese is smart enough, however, to use interviews and clips from all stages of the Stones' career for purposes of humor and even commentary on ...

  • shine a light

Shine a Light is a good concert documentary. The Stones look old, but after all they are in their 60's. Their music is great and it takes you back to when you first heard it. The Stones started with a love of the Blues and it shows in the song, Champagne and Reefer with Buddy Guy. The Stones clearly have reverence for Buddy Guy. Keith turns his guitar over to the Blues master at the end of the song. Jagger's harmonica on the song is great. President Clinton introduces the Stones and you wonder if he would have rather have been a Rockstar. If you are the Stones, you are not limited to 2 terms.

  • Shine a LIght DVD The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones have been around for a long time now, and while you can see their age on their faces, you'd never know it by their performance and energy on the stage! This is a great movie/concert for any Stones fan. It is also great to see a band that you know are truly enjoying playing music together. The almost continuous smile on Keith Richards' face, Mick Jagger's ability to still rock the audience and the enjoyment seen in the rest of the band,Buddy Guy, Jack White, the backup players and singers make this concert a joy to watch. The Stones will always rock on! Truly enjoyable!

  • Rolling Stones live documentary

If you love the Stones you will love this. It was an excellent rock dvd on a legendary band. The only negative thing to say is it seemed a bit overproduced and way too scripted. If you don't have it get it for a good used price like i did, rent it, check it out of the library or whatever. If you like the Stones and Scorcese then get it by all means it. If not catch it at some point watch it.

  • Rolling Stones Seriously Rocking it!!

Holy Cow do these aging rockers know how to put on a show or what? Just amazing concert footage done extremely well by Martin Scorses & crew. Tons of close-ups of Mick, Ronnie,Keith & Charlie. They work their keisters off & these fella are nearly 70 years old!! Plenty of great old hits like "Brown Sugar" but also pleanty of REALLY old hits like "AS Tears Go By". Just an amazing concert DVD. Worth every penny. They rock as well as the "kids" in AC/DC & that's saying a lot.
