Excellent Quaity Nut if the Pre-cut grading is Right for You
This brass guitar nut is an excellent choice if the pre-cut slot spacing matches your needs. The solid brass material is of high quality. As indicated in sale listings, some significant adjustments are required to fit each specific guitar, and sufficient extra material is provided in height and depth to adjust to most Gibson-type guitars. The brass material is extremely hard. The strings have very low drag across the nut and can therefore be tuned accurately without having to "stretch-in" each string at tuning time. Be aware that this hard material (as with any brass nut) is also tough on tools; custom nut-slotting files in particular cut very slowly and become dull rapidly. Even ordinary file have trouble cutting unless they are brand new. The nut, as delivered, does not quite match ... The shoulders are actually more rounded, and there is much less spare material across the top surface than the picture indicates. The grading as delivered was approximately 1.41 inches from E-to-E. I found that there was sufficient height to allow cutting a new set of slots at a wider spacing, but the rounded shoulders prevented the use of a spacing greater than about 1.46-1.48" a the full height. In order to achieve the 1.53" grading that I was seeking, which should have been possible with the nut shown in the picture, I found that I had to cut down the height of the nut so much that shims were required to get the strings to the correct height. Even so, half the thickness of the low E string is above the top of the nut. So, if you are OK with the relatively narrow 1.41" pre-cut string spacing, this nut is a great choice. Otherwise, I would recommend using an unslotted nut, rather than this one.
