Tennessee Williams based his screenplay on Oscar Saul's adaptation of Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play set in a grimy New Orleans project. The story of the fragile sentimentalism of a former prostitute who visits her sister only to be taunted mercilessly by her childish brother-in-law. Academy Award Nominations: 12, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Screeplay. Academy Awards: 4, including Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter), and Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden). The director's cut contains three minutes of previously censored footage.

A Streetcar Named Desire
One of Elia Kazan's best masterpieces. The Tennessee William's adaption not only stayed faithful to the novel but exceeded its original standards. Awesome performances by the whole cast. Marlon Brando was at his best being paired to one of the greatest actresses of her time, Vivien Leigh. Also notable were Kim Hunter and Karl Malden's work. Great characterizations. Highly recommend it!!!

A film that spoke to a generation.
There are many reasons this film is a classic. Tennessee Williams is a genius. Elia Kazan is a visionary. This is an epic in the history of film. They do not make them like this any more.
