About this product

Product Information

Charles Dickens's classic tale of orphan struggle is brought to the screen once more--this time by PBS in a six-hour miniseries originally broadcast in October of 2000. When his mother (Sophia Myles) is unable to support him, the eponymous young Twist (Sam Smith) becomes doomed to wither away his youth in the horrid bowels of Parish Workhouse. From there, however, Twist is sold as an apprentice into an even more abusive circumstance. Before long, he goes on a series of adventures with a variety of characters. A beloved tale of overcoming odds.

Sam Smith did an excellent job as Oliver and the others were very scary!

The first DVD stopped working toward the end. I played it on another computer and it worked. The other two DVDs worked great. Great acting, Great script, great photography for an old Masterpiece theater.

  • Oliver Twist: The whole story

This may be the most interesting and compelling take on the Oliver Twist story available. Unlike most versions, and indeed, unlike Dickens himself, this movie tells the "whole story" of Oliver Twist. As the introduction by Russell Baker makes clear, Dickens was rather vague about the origin and background of the orphan Oliver Twist and the story about how this child from an apparently respectable family would come to such an unfortunate fate in his early years. Where Dickens attempts to fill in the background of Oliver at the end of the book, and does so only briefly; this film fully develops the story of Oliver's parents and how the tragic twists of fate that befell them ultimately contributed to Oliver's unfortunate placement in an orphanage. While purists may argue that the writers of ...

  • best oliver yet

I liked that this version was a complete story. When dickens wrote this it was very disjointed with him deciding at the end to sum things up and try to come up with a reason. Although this version did not follow the story exactly I think that it was better for it. The scenery is beautiful, and the first episode makes you forget who this story is really about. It could easily be a jane austen movie adaptation. Then comes the nitty gritty, the story we know. The acting is top notch. even some exaggerated characters are enjoyable because of the background for the story being so mellow, and yet sad. It is also funny in the way that you would hope a bbc period drama would be. Andy Serkis is great and scary as bill sykes. Who new gollum could be so violent. Yes this version strays from the book, ...
