Solid program
When used in conjunction with the teacher's manual, these worksheets and flashcards make a very good 1st grade math program. There are more problems available that I feel are necessary so I only assign about half of them to my children (students). I like that I have the option of assigning more problems if they are struggling in a certain area. This program lays a great foundation for math. It does not have all the colors and pictures like some other programs, but does include some games and when used with math manipulatives can be just as fun (in my opinion).When used in conjunction with the teacher's manual, these worksheets and flashcards make a very good 1st grade math program. Easy to use and comprehensive
After reviewing several homeschool math curricula, we finally decided on Saxon. I was impressed with the ease of use, as a first time homeschooler, it literally tells you exactly what to say (of course you don't HAVE to). This is perfect if you're not feeling very confident teaching math. I especially liked the way each lesson built upon the last, and every day's worksheet included skills learned in all previous lessons! It's amazing how quickly kids can forget previously learned skills (esp. in math), this prevented that problem. So although some may find it repetitive, it really helps to reinforce. One thing I did not like about Saxon, is refering to addition as a "some, some more", and subtraction "some, some went away" problem. It just sounds too baby-ish for me. We also quickly found ... One final note about this- I've since found that each level of Saxon (1,2,3...)begins with a lot of review. This can become monotonous for the child that still remembers the lessons, we skip over those (maybe talk about it briefly), and move on to the next "new" lesson.

Saxon Math 1 Workbooks
I love Saxon Math for homeschooling my children. My children grasp math concepts pretty quickly, therefore they get bored if I give them a large number of problems of the same type. Saxon curriculum offers worksheets that include several different kinds of problems on each. This "spiral" approach to learning is excellent for ongoing review of concepts previously taught while continuing to advance through new concepts. However, this curriculum does also include fact sheets to aid in mastering basic facts. My children like this part of the curriculum the least, although I find it a necessary part of early fact learning and it challenges them when they are timed (as suggested in the teacher's manual). These workbook packets are put together nicely for easy use. The fact sheets, workpages ... I love Saxon Math for homeschooling my children. These workbook packets are put together nicely for easy use. The fact sheets, workpages and assessments are all bound in order as they will be needed. There is a simple top edge glue binding so you can tear each page off easily as you need it. These workbooks also include special pages to keep student records and some other teacher helps. I have been very pleased with the workbooks as well as the Teacher's Manuals and Meeting books that accompany the primary levels of Saxon Math Curriculm. They seem to transition well into the upper elementary and middle grades Saxon curriculum which include a more traditional textbook. I highly recommend Saxon Math products!
