The first half is pretty much a comedy, Stewart playing wimpy deputy hired to fill a dead man's shoes. The second half a real Western drama.
This is a good ol' classic from Hollywood's golden age. Two great stars, Dietrich and Jimmy Stewart. Not sure if Stewart was a full blown star already. If not, this film would have catapulted him to that status. He's very young here and never more handsome in any of his films. Dietrich was already a big star in Europe before she fled Hitler. And one of the great beauties of that era. Also cast is Mischa Auer, one of the best comic extras of that time. Screenplay by Ben Hecht. Some may come in equal, but none can beat him. Great classic film!
I love to watch old movies & have the AFI listings in a folder so I can find movies to watch. With Roku & alot of streaming areas, usually I can find most movies. But this movie was one that was on a ton of the lists for AFI but I have never found it for free streaming. I found this dvd for about the same amount of money it took to rent it on Amazon, so I took a chance & just bought the dvd. It's a great film, highly engaging with a very young Jimmy Stewart running around with Mae West. Excellent Jimmy Stewart western.
Great Jimmy Stewart western, not the shoot'em up type you'd expect like Winchester '73 or Naked Spur, Man from Laramie. He's Destry, son of a famous lawman, who cleans up towns with his wit and ingenuity instead of guns. He's after the town's leading saloon owner and power broker who's "stealing" ranches in backroom poker games aided by the female foil Marlene Dietrich who's a riot as "Frenchy". With the death of the sheriff, the mayor and crooked saloon owner Kent (Brian Donlevy) select their choice as worst possible lawman, the town drunk "Wash" Dimsdale to be sheriff. But "Wash" surprises everyone in Bottleneck by sending for Tom Destry and the battle of wits begins. Very entertaining western, recommend to ...
