For History or 'The Boat' Fans
This is the real story of Buchheim's two voyages about U-Boats. The first voyage is that of U-96 that Das Boot was based on. Here are the real incidents in words and pictures that all fans of the book and movie will easily recognize: the first depth charging, the storm, and the horrific sinking of the damaged tanker. Also included is the real mid-Atlantic meeting with U-Hirsacker (U-Thompsen in the book). In reality the Old Man maneuvered UA as close to U-Thompsen as possible in order for Buchheim to get some spectacular pictures. Action photographs of the crew include the real Old Man, second watch officer, navigator, and the Chief as well as shots of the crowded torpedo room accommodations. The second voyage is that aboard U-309 as the U-Boats evacuate the French coastal bases and head ... This is the real story of Buchheim's two voyages about U-Boats. The only incident from this relatively short voyage that appears in The Boat is the mine/bomb sinking of the second U-Boat (U-981) at La Palice (relocated to Lorient, in the book). Buchheim keeps up a running historical/political commentary regarding the Battle of the Atlantic in the German military's strategy as well as on historical personalities such as Donitz, Speer, and Hitler. There is an afterword written by Michael Salewski entitled The Submarine War: A Historical Essay which provides a background in which to view the events portrayed in U-Boat War. This is a must for all fans of Das Boot. For U-Boat historians the 205 pictures alone are worth the price of the book.

Best of the best submarine books.
As a submariner in a previous life I can say for SURE this is one of the very best submarine books printed. Almost all other books about the silent service are Hollywood fluff, This is a true accounting of what the German submarine forces went through in those past incivilities. Well worth your time and money if you are serious about reading of this subject.
