  • Don't miss the obscure goodies!

I'm not a fan of Al Jolson. Sorry! Maybe you're not either. But take another look at this box set: Three DVDs crammed full of bonus material! You'll find program length documentaries on the introduction of sound movies, plus literally hours of 10-minute Warner Brothers shorts from the late 1920s. What a show! Vaudeville was before my time, but you get a pretty good idea what it was all about from the line-up here. Sentimental songs, comedy sketches, incredibly strange novelty acts... it's all here! Some of the performers are well known (George Burns and Gracie Allen were active well into the days of television; Rose Marie was a regular on the Dick Van Dyke show in the 1960s). Others performers are obscure, but just as entertaining as the big names. All girl jazz bands? World War ...

  • Original -Jazz Singer on DVD

Well done DVD, especially Disc 3 -since it contains pure original VAUDEVILLE. Years ago, I did a Master's Thesis Show on VAUDEVILLE & I sure wish this was around at that time. My research would have been that much easier, plus to actually see Pure Acts working was a great thrill and feature of this DVD. Burns & Allen doing 'Lamb Chops' - was a highlight, and to view this is worth the price of this total DVD. Many of the Acts that I've just read about are here, and that too was another highlight. Al Jolson as the 'Jazz Singer' plus the other disc is well worth having, whether a Fan of this period for you yourself or as a Gift will treasured for years to come. I love it.

  • A landmark in American cinema and the immigrant experience

Its a period piece, the first talkie. Jolson in blackface is unfortunate but little different than reading Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Great documentation in the 3 volume set, great replicas of promotional materials used at its release..

  • "JazzSinger" was Jolson's rabbi father's angry description of his son's night club singing.

This Hollywood's ground-breaking entry into movies lithesome sound. The only negative aspect off the film Jolson's appearance in black-face, on 2 occasions.
