I LOVE IT!!!
Ok, I haven't actually bought it off ebay yet but I am going to! The dancing is phenomenal and singing is out of the world! The thing I especially appreciate about this musical is that most of the songs were hits in their day and they have such catching tunes you can't get them out of your head! Ethel plays the high class brassy girl we have all come to love and Donald O'Connor proves that his voice can be classed with the best of them. His dance scenes are truly memorable and Vera Ellen is graceful and charming as always. This made me want to get up and dance. If you are looking to be innocently entertained with that cinderella feel this is it!Ok, I haven't actually bought it off ebay yet but I am going to! Merman is always great. This movie isn't.
Ethel Merman was great on stage where you had to yell to be heard in the last row of big theatres, but she wasn't quite so subtle for movies, hence making few. Her musical numbers in this are still worth seeing and Donald O'Connor was pretty good. George Sanders is a big mistake in this. Also they tossed original songs from the stage musical like "I Like Ike," replacing them with older Irving Berlin songs that don't quite fit in.
